Shaker Communal Life:
Did the lifestyle support mental health?
Wednesday, July 20, 2022
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Online Event
Formed in the United States by a small band of immigrants in the late 18th century, the expansion and contraction of the Shaker communities tells the story of thousands of people who, against the backdrop of revolution, industrialization, epidemic, and civil war, made a decision to forsake accepted social norms of the day and live in large chosen families. This communal life demanded sacrifice and conviction and in return offered the promise of utopian experience.
What can our knowledge about the Shakers tell us about our present moment? Join the museum's Director of Collections and Research, Jerry Grant, for a presentation about Shaker life followed by a discussion with community leaders who are currently working to provide comfort and mental health services to people of all ages.

The Mycelium Project,
Building house parts with fungi
Wednesday, August 10, 2022
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Online Event
The Shakers gave profound attention to issues of equity and inclusion, education, environmental sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, and social welfare, all while creating an extraordinary body of material objects, including by extending well beyond the quintessential Shaker chair and Shaker oval box.
Shaker Museum recognizes contemporary innovator designing future structures with sustainable components fabricated solely from mycelium, a fungus related to mushroom growth. This carbon-absorbing natural resource could dramatically reduce the impact the built environment will have on the natural environment.
Hear about how the collaboration of a team of architects, mycelium experts, building science engineers, structural engineers, and design students resulted in a hypothetical custom residential architectural commission.
